The Bombardier Learjet 60 – Midsize Private Jet

Mike Lederer

Considering the purchase of a midsize aircraft?  With so many options available it can be dizzying trying to navigate the specifications, perks, operating costs, and all the other intricacies one must consider in order to make the best investment possible.

Enter the Learjet 60, it has an impressive performance record throughout its long service history with the first model entering service in 1993, but few people know just how significant this aircraft truly is.  I’ll break this down into two parts:

  1. Cabin comfort
  2. Operating costs/performance

Cabin Comfort

Retailers and brokers alike have dropped phrases like “spacious cabin” and “ample headroom” on this aircraft since it was first introduced almost two decades ago, but let’s break this down even further.  In other similar aircraft in this class, such as the Hawker 800 and 850 lines, one must literally track the seats toward the center aisle in order to be comfortable in terms of headroom.  The 60 has, as I like to tell my clients, good “seated headroom”, or good headroom without having to track the seats inboard thus reducing useable cabin volume and aisle space.  The numbers are deceptive, as the 800/850 on paper has more cabin volume and length, but consider what matters to you while in flight.

Operating Costs/Performance

You may notice that I grouped operating costs and performance into the same category.  When purchasing an aircraft one must be aware of how the two coincide with each other.  Often times the estimated operating costs issued by a manufacturer or published by a broker are based on reduced performance numbers.  The Lear 60 has both: exceptional performance while maintaining the lowest operating costs in class at peak performance levels.  The Pratt & Whitney 305 engines launch the aircraft to 51,000 feet, higher and faster to altitude than any other aircraft in its class.  Adding to excellent flight performance, the Learjet 60 has independent anti-skid braking on dual main landing gear as well as an array of other features setting it apart in safety, efficiency and performance.

Global Express XRS with Global Vision Flight Deck re-branded Global 6000?

Customers often ask me about changes in the aircraft market, especially long-range jets. That’s why I wanted to pass this along to you. At EBACE this week Bombardier announced a name change for one of their most popular business jets.  The Global Express XRS will now be known as the Global 6000.  The renaming makes sense in light of the rest of the Global line beginning with the Global 5000 and ending with Bombardier’s two most recent announcements of the Global 7000 and 8000 ultra long range aircraft that will compete with the Gulfstream G650.

Here is a quick rundown of the new product line:

Global 6000

Global 5000 – 5,200nm at mach 0.85

Global 6000 – 6,000nm at mach 0.85

Global 7000 – 7,300nm at mach 0.85

Global 8000 – 7,900nm at mach 0.85

So, how long is the wait for the Global?  As of this post the next available delivery positions should be Q1/Q2 2014. Good news is that we may be able to find you an earlier position! To learn more call or email me mlederer@twcaviation.com / +1.770.973.4707

TWC and Embraer Showcase New Legacy 650

On May 18, at our Van Nuys Airport facility, Embraer and TWC Aviation hosted an exclusive one-day showing of Embraer’s newest entry into the business jet market, the Legacy 650. Only 11 Legacy 650 jets are in operation worldwide, so this event offered a rare opportunity to tour this exciting new aircraft.

The Legacy 650 is a longer-range version of the popular Legacy 600. The nonstop range with four passengers has increased to 3,900 nm. With eight passenger it’s now 3,840 nm—about 500 nm farther than its predecessor. The extended range is by virtue of the upgraded Rolls-Royce engines, offering an additional 4,000 lbs. of thrust, and increased fuel capacity gained by a completely new landing gear system. The 650 also offers the Honeywell Primus Elite™ integrated avionics system, which provides advanced flight deck functionality and improved situational awareness.

The Legacy 650 was first announced at NBAA 2009, received certification by the FAA in February 2011, and in May 2011 the first Legacy 650 was registered in the United States and will be managed by TWC Aviation.
